The Lightning-Scarred

The Inspiration
The Lightning-Scarred is my tribute to Daniel Radcliffe‘s portrayal of Harry Potter.
This piece aims to show the vulnerability inherent in Daniel’s portrayal of the teenage Potter at the same time as revealing the steely resolve that was the defining characteristic of the character. Daniel’s face is instantly recognisable and his portrayal won a legion of fans, worldwide. My challenge was to create something worthy of those fans.
The Craft
I had to select a piece of ply with a very neutral grain pattern for this burn as I knew that there was going to be a lot of layered shading as well as heavy, dark line work … not something that bands of hard grain would allow.
Very light shading on the face was required in order to retain a youthful expression. Conversely much heavier shading and thin, black line work were needed for the deep-set eyes and heavy eyebrows. To attain the crispness that I wanted, the piece was carried out entirely using a narrow wire tip.
