The Crimson Wrath
Pure fury requires no words.
Flashing with demonic ember light, this burning stare marks the final sight of anyone foolish enough to challenge its domain.
The Inspiration
The Crimson Wrath is a study in unbridled visceral fury and sits as part of a triptych of unsettling “maniac eyes” along with The Fractured Mind and The Shadowed Glare.
I love creating disturbing works and had the idea for a series in which each piece depicts an extreme close-up of the eyes of a madman looking directly at the viewer, as if through a letter-box. The Crimson wrath is the only piece in the collection that uses colour to focus attention on the centre of the eyes. The subject is clearly very angry.
The Craft
To make the piece work, even the areas which are underneath the frame are burned – the illusion would be ruined otherwise.
The line work is stark and black with shadows being heavy and dark. The shading is harsh and serves to highlight the furrowed brow and hidden snarl. The red eyes were added, using wood stain, after the piece had been burned and the boundary of each iris was heavily burned so as to avoid the stain bleeding outwards.
