The Shadowed Glare
It watches from the dark where light refuses to go.

Bound within cold ash, this relentless gaze cuts through the gloom, hungrily tracking those who wander off the safe path.
The Inspiration
The Shadowed Glare represents cold, caged, calculating malice waiting to strike. Its home is within a triptych of disquieting “maniac eyes” along with The Crimson Wrath and The Fractured Mind.
I had the idea for an ominous series showing extreme close-ups of the eyes of a madman looking directly at the viewer through an opening. The Shadowed Glare depicts the most in-control subject in the triptych. This subject is clearly angry at the world but hasn’t descended into uncontrollable rage and isn’t lost within the confines of his own mind, he’s just waiting for his chance and then he’ll escape.
The Craft
This piece is nearly all solid black line work to achieve a level of intense darkness. Line shading is used on the cheeks to add texture and graininess whilst gradient shading is used sparingly to show brow shape and to create the details in the irises.
The artwork is burned to the edge of the ply, all the way underneath the frame – maintaining the artifice of proximity to the staring subject.
