The Whispering Fiend
He feeds on the echo of a scream.

Born from the shadow side of the big top, this manic entity was bound to ash and wood after tempting the circus master into a fatal bargain.
The Inspiration
The aim with The Whispering Fiend was quite simple – to capture a fantastical being who simply doesn’t care about anything other than following his own unimaginable urges.
I defined the character: He is not bound by societal norms, he loves inflicting pain, his only concern is whatever his depraved mind can conjure up. Then all I had to do was the fun part – burn that monster onto some wood!
The Craft
Despite the darkness of the subject matter, the shading is quite light on this piece with fine, light strokes being used to show the many overlapping curves of the fiend’s face.
The swirling circular grain pattern of the birch plywood adds to the manic feel of the piece without preventing the dark line work needed to pick out the details of the neck ears and teeth.
