The Dawn-watcher’s Hut

The Inspiration
As a reader of fantasy novels I have always been drawn to the mage living quietly on their own surrounded by nature, whether this was Nevyn in Katherine Kerr’s ‘Deverry Cycle’ books or Tom Bombadil in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, a quiet little house in the middle of the forest away from prying eyes and noise has always been appealing. So having finished the audio book version of ‘Lord of the Rings’ recently I was inspired to create this picture.
A further note here though … while this always sounds idyllic, the practicalities are not always ideal. So while a girl can dream, she also likes her mod cons!
The Craft
I had been playing with various ink and water backgrounds a few weeks before starting this picture. Sometimes I need to make backgrounds and then come back to them fresh eyes. Something about this background made me think about a woodland glade and I knew then which stamps I wanted to use.
I stamped the trees first to create a window for the wee cottage and then I had to ground all of them by blending in some ground. The watercolour pencils came out for this one with some gentle shading on the roof of the cottage to hint at dawn breaking. I knew I didn’t want leaves on the trees for this one but I did want vines and lots of wild flowers. Then finally I added the magical touches of glitter.
